Yesterday we hosted our biennial Recruiters Day – a day to both appreciate and learn with employers. We had an amazing variety of employers represented including management consulting, boutique consulting, investment banking, private equity, manufacturing, media/ tech, healthcare, diversified financial services, nonprofit, and travel/ transportation. Companies included large well-known brands and startups as well as many in between.
The day included information sharing by the CDO about all of our degrees and rich discussions about various ways to connect with SOM talent (you!). What we’ve seen work and what we’ve seen flop. The highlight for many of the employers was the lunchtime student panel (thank you!). We had five of your classmates going into a diverse array of organizations answering questions about the recruiting process and sharing insights about the student experience (and what they valued/ wish they knew as they were recruiting – there were many perspectives shared!).
Some points of interest that came up:
- Many companies are still hiring for summer internships and full time positions. If you’re still seeking, stay on top of CMS and Slack for opportunities!
- Recruiters notice when you’re reading off a script on Zoom interviews – don’t do it!
- Recruiters also notice when you’re reading AI answers during interviews – again, don’t do it/ you will not move forward!
- They use the resume book – if you’re not in it, you’re missing out. Make sure your CMS profile is updated to reflect your current industry, function, and geographical preferences.
Most of all, employers value getting to know you. They want you to get to know them and for you to share yourself. They brought this up a few times throughout the day. They care about what makes you you, and how hiring you is different than other students. One summed it up to me well, “Your students are great. They’re all talented, smart and capable. They have the skills – and all of that is a baseline. The final decisions are based on who we want on our team – who we want to work with every day.”
