CDO Summer Exploration: Sustainability

Skills to Highlight for Sustainability Roles

1. Core Business Acumen + Purpose-Driven Mindset

  • Employers want graduate business students who bring strategic thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to drive results—while embedding purpose.
  • Demonstrate experience with:
    • Strategy or operations under ESG constraints
    • Stakeholder collaboration (internal and external)
    • Translating mission into measurable KPIs

2. ESG and Climate Literacy

  • Know the basics of:
    • ESG frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD)
    • Climate risk
    • Circular economy, sustainable sourcing, decarbonization
  • Familiarity with reporting tools and data is a plus (MSCI, CDP, B Impact, EcoVadis).

3. Systems Thinking + Communication

  • Sustainability often requires working cross-functionally and communicating complex, long-term goals to non-experts.
  • Highlight your ability to connect dots between profit, planet, and people.

4. Data & Analytical Skills

  • Sustainability roles increasingly involve scenario analysis, supply chain modeling, or impact metrics.
  • Skills in Excel, Tableau, or LCA tools can differentiate you.

Nuances for International Students

1. Work Authorization Considerations

  • Some organizations, especially startups, nonprofits, or small B Corps, may not sponsor visas.
  • Larger corporates, consultancies, and financial institutions (e.g., McKinsey Sustainability, EY Climate Change & Sustainability, Amazon’s sustainability team) are more likely to sponsor.
  • Use CPT for summer internships.

2. Global Experience is an Asset

  • Sustainability challenges and regulations differ by country—your experience in your home market is extremely valuable.
    • Example: If you’ve worked on water scarcity or clean energy policy, highlight that regional insight.
  • Organizations with global operations or development mandates actively seek diverse perspectives.
