Insights for Employers: Maximize your networking event participation

Yale SOM hosts in-person and virtual career networking events throughout the year to foster student and employer connections. Read on for event details and tips to make the most of your participation.

HireSOM 101:

HireSOM is the brand name of Yale SOM multi-employer career networking events. Most events are open to all employers with current or upcoming hiring needs.

What to expect:

  • 60 – 90 minutes in length
  • Free for students and employers
  • Little to no prep for employers
  • Virtual on Zoom or in-person at a venue
    • Virtual: Employers talk with students in small groups from their dedicated breakout room
    • In-person: No booths, no swag, no banners: think cocktail party vs. career fair as employer representatives and students are encouraged to mix and mingle

Yale SOM also co-hosts networking events with other schools under different branding. In some cases, networking events are focused on specific industries, functions and/or student audiences.

Maximize your participation:

  1. Details Matter!
Students can (and do!) access employer registration details as they make their networking plan. Additionally, the CDO team references registration information to help market employer participation and opportunities. Provide complete, specific, and compelling information to boost promotion of your organization and role(s).
  2. Invite students to connect
Access free Yale SOM resume books, filter based on your hiring needs, and reach out directly to invite students to connect at the upcoming networking event. This simple step helps students feel the love and attracts your target audience.
  3. Offer a new touchpoint
For employers already hosting Yale SOM-dedicated events, consider inviting a different representative to offer students a new POV and connection. Ideas include Yale alum or reps from different geographies or functional areas.
  4. Exchange contact information to continue the conversation
Treat networking events as a step in building a recruiting relationship. To keep the focus on making connections, we ask students to not bring their resumes to networking events. Instead, exchange contact information with students during the event and reach out to continue advancing the connection.

Final Thoughts:

Yale SOM networking events offer a no cost/ low prep way for employers of all sizes to connect with full-time and internship candidates. They are ideal branding and candidate attraction vehicles, whether your only connection point with Yale SOM students or layered into a broader recruiting strategy. Ready to join us?
