Insights for Employers: Three steps to a breakthrough recruiting event

Recruiting, classes, clubs, oh my! Students have no lack of choices when it comes to filling their calendar, so how do you attract your target audience and ensure your recruiting engagement is not lost? Read on for our top tips.

Catch student attention

Marketing starts with a captivating title and a description that compels students to register.

Include in the description:
– what students gain/ learn by attending
– ideal student target audience
– names and roles of representatives attending the event

Don’t miss the gold-standard example below!

Offer compelling content

Deliver on the momentum from your event description by hosting an engaging event. Share intro slides in advance and instead focus on connecting and providing insight that students would not discover during their own research.

Formats to consider:
– a day in the life overview
– panel discussion
– functional deep dive
– ask me anything

Include time on the agenda for networking or student Q&A to foster connection and learn what is on students’ minds.

Start (and continue) the conversation

Pre-Event:
Access the Yale SOM resume books to identify and personally invite students who match your target audience.

During the Event:
Share contact information, dates of additional events, and what to expect from the application/ interview process.

Post-Event:
Go the extra mile by reaching out to registered students post-event with a thank you for attending and a note on how to continue the conversation.

Sample Event Description:

Handsome Dan, Inc. “Ask Me Anything” Alumni Panel

Join us for an interactive panel discussion with recently hired Yale SOM alumni and other MBA associates at Handsome Dan, Inc. This event will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about the work we do, the various career opportunities HDI has to offer post-internship, and a feel for our culture, people, practice areas and more – from alumni in the role. While this session is mostly geared towards candidates seeking summer 2025 internship opportunities, we invite all graduate students to join, network with our teams, and learn more about HDI.
