Key skills needed to navigate ever present change in nonprofits

Change is constant in the nonprofit world. Whether it’s adapting to new funding realities, expanding programs, or responding to shifts in community needs, nonprofit leaders tackle change daily. They must guide their organizations through transformation while staying true to their mission. They must keep in mind the “why” while providing clarity through uncertainty. Leading through change can be daunting. However, as highlighted at the recent Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance annual social impact conference, crisis breeds innovation.

Several great takeaways from the conference centered on the skills needed to be successful while navigating constant organizational change.

  • While skills like adaptability and transparency are required from leadership, keeping staff engaged and operations strong require additional skills.
  • Successful change leaders must blend highly nuanced skills such as strategy and structure for the most beneficial impact on their communities.
  • With strategy – look at what the organization has in place to deal with change. With structure – ensuring the right pieces are in place to make decisions.

Incorporating these skills into social impact work means balancing both strategy and structure through clear purpose, operational capacity, flexibility, and clear and consistent communication. In the fast-changing nonprofit landscape, leading change requires authenticity, clarity, and compassion; and success depends on aligning both with your mission and empowering people to bring that mission to life.
