When academics take a break, recruiting does not

Upcoming breaks in the academic calendar are a welcome sight! A valuable, fun and often needed chance to refresh yourself, change-up your schedule, and possibly travel. However, due to hiring demands of organizations, varying academic calendars across business schools, and the tight recruiting timeframe for many roles and industries, recruiting does not take a similar break.

Employer activity to expect over break:

In the United States, a number of large organizations with application deadlines in 2023 will conduct summer internship interviews in January, 2024, including during Yale SOM’s break. A few of these interviews will be in-person, typically at the office location; those that are virtual will be conducted during business hours of the office location. If you are applying for such internships, it is recommended you build flexibility into your schedule to easily manage interview schedules, potential travel for interviews, and needed accommodations for virtual interviews.

Examples to expect for this January, 2024, include:

Consulting:

  • Analysis Group will hold virtual first-round interviews the first two weeks of January
  • Bain will host office-based virtual power round interviews the first two weeks of January for US + Canada offices
  • McKinsey will host its Super Day on Thurs Jan 4 for US + Canada offices
  • BCG will host virtual interviews Fri Jan 5 for US + Canada offices
    • For MBB, offices outside of US + Canada schedule interviews from early January through February
  • Chartis will hold virtual interviews Jan 10-12 and final rounds in person Jan 19, 22 or 26
  • Deloitte will host on-campus interviews in Evans Hall Wed Jan 10
  • EY-Parthenon will host in-person interviews in Boston on Thurs Jan 11 or Fri Jan 12
  • Most other consulting firms will host virtual interviews throughout January

Investment Banking:

  • JPMorgan hosts two separate Super Days rounds; Yale SOM students likely to be invited to Dec 5-6 round, but some may be included in the first week of January
  • Houlihan Lokey first-round interviews will be the first week of January
  • Evercore Houston office is targeting the first week of January for in-person interviews; same timing for Private Capital Markets and Real Estate in NYC
  • Morgan Stanley Financial Institutions Group (FIG) will likely host its Super Days the first week of January
  • Baird Super Day likely Fri Jan 5

Tech and Media & Entertainment:

  • While different tech firms approach interviewing differently, Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft will start rolling interviews across functions in October, and continue until roles are filled, including through breaks
  • Warner Brothers is hosting an in-person trek in Burbank, California Fri Jan 12, and virtually Fri Jan 19 – attendance is required for your application to be considered
